Frequently Asked Questions about Mozart Math

About Us

The math concepts taught are based on the state math educational standards from California and Texas for kindergartners. The activities used in the lesson plans are appropriate for 3-5 year olds.

I don't know a lot about music or musical terms. Can I still understand and teach this curriculum?
An italicized dialogue format is included in the lesson plans to help those teachers and parents that are beginners at music theory. The musical terms are explained clearly and simply so that you can learn right along with the children. It's easy to learn and fun to teach!

What makes your curriculum different than other music programs?
The MozartMath program teaches children music theory as well as music appreciation. The children learn to read notes, rests, time signature, etc., and how to play a simple rhythm instrument. The music skills taught can be a preparation for further private instrumental or vocal training. More importantly, no other music program integrates both math and music concepts.

What makes your curriculum different than other math programs?
Math is typically taught independent of other subject matter. The MozartMath interdisciplinary approach makes math meaningful and tangible. The children are introduced to math concepts that are typically not introduced until kindergarten. By introducing the children earlier to these math concepts through the powerful medium of music, the children will find more success with math as they continue through school.

How much will this curriculum cost and what is included?
The MozartMath Learning Set can be purchased for $79.99. The kit includes 34 lesson plans and the corresponding curriculum tools and activity pages, a Music Appreciation Kit, a MusicBox CD, a MusicBox puzzle, and a pair of sand blocks. The complete set comes in a binder for easy use and storage.

What major composers are included in the program?
Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Strauss, and Pachelbel are the composers included in the MozartMath Learning Set. This is meant to be a springboard for further study of other great composers!

How long does each lesson take to teach?
The lessons are made up of a variety of activities that take a total of 10-15 minutes to teach. The lessons are easily modified given the time restraints of each individual classroom.

Is there a lot of preparation time required for each lesson?
Initially there will be some limited preparation of the curriculum tools. Once that is completed, the curriculum tools can be used over and over again with minimal preparation time for each lesson. The kit is designed to be all-inclusive and ready to use. This saves you both time and money.

Is this a supplementary music/math program or will it take the place of my regular math program?
The MozartMath program has a two-fold purpose: This program is meant to reinforce the math concepts already being taught as well as introduce children to new math concepts they will encounter in kindergarten. Therefore, it can be used as a supplementary or as a stand-alone educational program.

Are there ways provided in the curriculum for parents to get involved?
Parent notes highlighting concepts taught are included to send home with the children. Also, a music list is included to encourage parents to obtain the music from the store or library so they can listen with their child at home. There is a graduation ceremony and performance at the end of the program that the parents should be invited to attend.

Are there group discounts available?
If you are purchasing 2-10 learning sets, you can receive a $10 discount per set. If you are interested in purchasing larger quantities, please call 1-800-466-9278 (1-866-4MOZART) for group discount rates.

About Us

The MozartMath Learning Set was created by a team of qualified professionals interested in first-rate education for children. As we looked around we could not find anything that incorporated math AND music in a complete program. Educators have always recognized the correlation between math and music, and yet no formal program has been available. Our goal is to provide a complete program that not only supplements the math already taught in the preschool classroom, but also introduces children to the math concepts they will encounter in kindergarten. It is our hope that by doing so, the children will have greater enjoyment and success in their math education.

Rebecca Larsen Seely, the president of MozartMath, Inc., received her B.S. in secondary education at Brigham Young University. Her first job after college, teaching high school, was the laboratory that shaped her beliefs in creative, individualized teaching based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. She found that most kids have a natural ability and desire to learn music. This inspired her to incorporate music in teaching many subjects, even in a traditional history classroom. In her second laboratory as a private piano teacher, Rebecca's students often asked why they had to learn math in their music lesson. Rebecca's third laboratory has been in the home as the mother of three preschoolers. These experiences inspired her to found MozartMath, Inc.

Marilyn Anderson graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University. She has owned and operated a private preschool for 15 years where music education and appreciation has been a core part of the curriculum. She loves working with preschoolers because they have such an open mind and are willing and eager for new experiences in learning. Marilyn has always been fascinated with the relationship of math and music, and this fascination was the foundation of her desire to help develop the MozartMath program. She loves all kinds of music--pop, classical, show tunes, jazz, New Age--but especially anything by the Beatles! As the mother of four daughters, music has played an important role in her home as well, with the girls playing a variety of musical instruments.

While doing undergraduate work in psychology, Shauntel Anderson developed an interest in (passion for) helping children learn about and enjoy their world. Consequently, she pursued a Master's degree in Educational Psychology and obtained School Psychology Certification as well. She worked for several years in the school system addressing the learning needs of preschool, elementary, and secondary students. She now works full time addressing the learning needs of her preschool daughter, and she also enjoys helping her piano students discover the rewarding world of music.

Upon graduation with a B.S. in Interior Design and a minor in art, Eva Marie Freeman had no idea that she would soon return as an instructor. She taught classes in design theory and drafting at Utah State University. She worked in various design firms on several notable projects, including the architectural details for the Luxor in Las Vegas. Eva Marie has extensive experience designing for commercial and healthcare projects. Freelancing with her side hobby of art has always been a fun change of pace for Eva. Eva's favorite job and first love will always be as mother of her two sons.
